The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits public accommodations — like restaurants, hotels, theaters, doctors' offices, lawyer’s offices, retail stores, libraries, private schools, and day care centers —from discriminating against an individual on the basis of disability in the full and equal enjoyment of its goods and services. The ADA guarantees Deaf and hard of hearing individuals more than mere access to public accommodations; it guarantees them “full and equal enjoyment” of their facilities and requires them to consider how their facilities are used by non-disabled guests and take reasonable steps to provide disabled guests with a like experience. This workshop, presented by attorney Chris Carlsen of the Arizona Center for Disability Law, will help to clarify the requirements of the ADA regarding the provision of interpreters and other auxiliary aids. .2 RID PS Legal CEUs and CLEs available. For several years now, ACDHH and Arizona RID have offered a mentoring program and we have experimented with different delivery methods. We are, once again, changing things up! We will approach mentoring in a “boot camp” style that will focus on one skill during an intensive 3-day session. Following the in-person component, apprentices will have the option of doing additional online practice with feedback from certified interpreters for 6-weeks. Our first Boot Camp session will focus on ASL to English Interpretation. Each day will focus on a particular feature/skill related to voice interpretation. Both Mentors and Apprentices will benefit from direct instruction, then Mentors will work with Apprentices to provide support and feedback during our MANY practice/application activities. CEUs will be provided for both Apprentices and Mentors. The 3-day session is $50 for Apprentices and FREE for Mentors! Contact Vicki Bond if you are interested in participating!
